Honey & beeswax

Honey & beeswax

Vegans do not consume or use beeswax. Bees store honey to have food available when nectar is not readily accessible, such as during a drought or in winter.

Why should we not consume honey or beeswax?

Bees are exploited to produce honey. Bees work hard to collect nectar and produce honey, which they use as a food source. Harvesting honey means removing their food resource, which can be harmful to the bee colony.

Commercial beekeeping can also negatively impact the ecosystem. An excessive focus on honeybees can reduce biodiversity, as other pollinators compete for the same resources.

Plant-based alternatives

There are many alternatives to honey and beeswax. Maple syrup, agave syrup, and date syrup work excellently as alternatives to honey. If the goal is to replace beeswax, carnauba wax or soy wax can be used instead.
