Cruelty free

"Cruelty-free" products are those that are manufactured without subjecting animals to any form of testing, harm, or exploitation. This philosophy extends beyond the final product, encompassing the entire supply chain. It demands the rejection of animal testing at any stage – from ingredient sourcing to production to the finished product. Cruelty free does not mean a product is vegan. A cruelty free product can contain animal derived ingredients, thus making it non-vegan.

China and animal testing

China used to have laws that mandated animal testing on cosmetics and other consumer products. Companies wanting to access the Chinese market had to surrender to tehse requirements, often involving cruel experiments on animals. This means that what could be seen as a cruelty free vegan product in fact isn't, because it's sold and therefore tested on animals in China. Fortunately, as of 2023, china has stopped requiring this post-market animal testing. Although, this creates a gray zone, as brands who decided to launch their product in China before 2023 technically allowed animal testing to be conducted.
