Milk
Milk
Milk is an animal product that comes from cows and other mammals like goats and sheep. To produce milk, these animals are kept in a continuous cycle of pregnancy and lactation, which means they are regularly inseminated, and their calves are removed shortly after birth so that the milk can be collected for human consumption.
Why should we not consume milk?
Animal Welfare: Taking milk from a cow often means her calf is taken from her, causing both the cow and the calf significant stress and grief. Additionally, dairy cows are subjected to intensive exploitation and are slaughtered when they no longer produce enough milk.
Exploitation: Veganism is about avoiding all forms of animal exploitation, including milk production. The dairy industry exploits animals to maximize the production of a natural substance intended to nourish their young.
Climate Impact: Milk production has a significant environmental impact, including high water usage, greenhouse gas emissions like methane, and destruction of natural habitats to create pastures and grow animal feed.
Resource Inefficiency: Producing milk requires a large amount of resources compared to plant-based alternatives, making it a less sustainable choice for people.
Plant-based Alternatives
Today, there are many plant-based alternatives to milk that are both delicious and nutritious. These include soy milk, oat milk, almond milk, and coconut milk, all of which can be used in the same way as cow's milk—from cooking and baking to pouring over coffee or breakfast cereal. Many of these alternatives are also fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and B12. Try different options and see which one you like best!
